Abstrakt
Artykuł przedstawia stan badań nad dziejami despotatu Epiru - jednego z państw powstałych po IV krucjacie na terenach dawnego Cesarstwa Bizantyńskiego. Problem badawczy dotyczy rozwoju historiografii poświęconej Epirze, zakresu dostępnych źródeł i głównych kierunków interpretacji dziejów tego państwa. Celem pracy jest omówienie najważniejszych badań dotyczących historii Epiru i ocena stanu wiedzy na temat jego polityki, administracji, społeczeństwa oraz kultury. Autorka zastosowała metodę historiograficzną i krytykę źródeł, analizując zarówno XIX-wieczne opracowania, jak i współczesne badania bizantynistyczne. W artykule wykazano, że przełomowe znaczenie dla badań nad Epirem miały prace Donalda Nicola, który opracował syntezę dziejów despotatu w latach 1204–1479. Omówiony został również wkład innych badaczy zajmujących się problematyką początków państwa epirockiego, jego administracji, kontaktów międzynarodowych i kwestii etnicznych. Autorka podkreśliła trudności badawcze wynikające z ograniczonej liczby źródeł lokalnych i zależności od przekazów bizantyńskich oraz zachodnich. Rezultaty analizy wskazują, że mimo znacznego postępu badań wiele zagadnień związanych z historią despotatu Epiru nadal pozostaje otwartych, zwłaszcza w zakresie życia społecznego, gospodarczego i kulturowego tego państwa.
